In order to build the 5G transmission base station, operators will increase the construction of transmission network in the next few years. This will bring about another explosion of procurement for optical fiber cable and become the optical fiber cable’s main driving force.

5G business drives higher requirements on network performance, while 5G applications mainly include enhanced mobile broadband, large-scale machine communication and high reliability and low latency communication. Compared with 4G system, the bandwidth demand increases 100 times, and latency requirement decreased 10 times. In limited spectrum resource planning, the requirements of business standards can only be met by adjusting the network system architecture. Under the new architecture, 5G C-RAN architecture will lead optical fiber cable demand to a large-scale increase. Considering the case of optical multiplexing, the demand for optical fiber cable will reach at least 600 million core kilometers in the next three years after 5G on-line, which is 3 to 4 times that of 4G.

5G saves site resources by centralized deployment and improves the utilization efficiency of air interface resources, so the density of optical fiber cable is more dense than that of 4G network and the demand for large-core optical cable will be more vigorous, In order to maximize the use of existing pipeline resources and site resources, increasing the optical fiber density and reducing cable diameter is the development trend of existing optical fiber cables. Now optical fiber cable manufacturers do many research and development on the small diameter and high-density fiber optic cable in the world.

In China, the manufacturers main research directions are the high-density cable which the ribbon fiber in loose tube with a stranding structure or scattered fiber loose tube layer 2 and 3 stranding structure.
